Nominate a Latina Writer for the 2023 Maestra Award

The Latina Writers Conference, in partnership with the Latino Arts Network of California (LAN) and the California Arts Council (CAC), awards one individual per conference who exhibits a mastery of creative writing illustrated through a wide range of performances, productions, and publications and exemplifies community work and mentorship in the southern california region. This prize is designed to recognize Latina writers and cultural workers who have demonstrated a commitment to community-based work and/or who have distinguished themselves as Masters in their field.

Past recipients include Trini Rodriguez and Gloria Enedina Alvarez.

This year we invite LWC participants to nominate writers and cultural workers who they believe should be given a Maestra Award.

Nominated individuals should:

  • Have regularly published, produced, or performed their creative writing, or led a program or organization in literary publishing (examples: bookseller, arts and literature curator, magazine editor, indie publisher)
  • Show great leadership within the Latina/x community
  • Illustrate strong mentorship to artists from the next generation
